The Must do Better Report and electoral campaign is a project of Muslim Family Initiative.

On 4 July, we can all shape the next government. Parliamentary candidates need to recognise the importance of parents as the primary educator of their children and the need for schools to meaningfully consult parents on what they teach our children as part of Relationships and Sex Education lessons.  This is where you can make a huge difference. We recommend that supporters ask candidates to approve our three pledges which seeks:

Election Pledges for PPCs Regarding RSE in Schools

  1. Mandate Parental Consultation in School Decision-Making

Commit to ensuring that Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) teaching in primary and secondary schools is based on meaningful consultation with parents, who are the primary educators of their children.

  1. Objective and Pluralistic Teaching

Ensure that RSE teaching complies with legal requirements by being objective, critical, and pluralistic. Teachers should refrain from promoting their personal views on relationships and instead recognise the broad range of perspectives present in the classroom and society.

  1. Clear Communication with Parents

Pledge to make schools fully transparent with parents about the materials they use, the external speakers they invite, what they teach, when they teach it, and provide clear guidelines on what parents can withdraw their children from.

Dear [Candidate’s Name],

As a potential constituent, I am writing to express my concerns regarding the teaching of Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) in schools across England. As a parent, it is crucial to me that my children receive education on relationships that is objective, critical, and pluralistic, in accordance with the law.

I am particularly worried about the lack of transparency from schools regarding the content and timing of RSE lessons. Furthermore, I believe schools should adhere to existing guidelines for consulting and engaging with parents on these matters.

I urge you to support the Could Do Better Campaign’s three pledges:

  1. Mandate Parental Consultation in School Decision-Making

Commit to ensuring that RSE teaching in primary and secondary schools is based on meaningful consultation with parents, who are the primary educators of their children.

Please confirm your backing of these pledges so I can inform the campaign. Your response, or lack thereof, will be noted on their website (www.coulddobetter.org.uk). This will also influence how I and other parents in the constituency vote on 4th July.

I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,
